The journey blends waterfront cities, Maori culture, vineyards, beaches, forests, cliffs, seals, waterfalls, and long stretches of scenic cruising. Depending on the itinerary, the experience may focus on nature, culture, families, or the South Island's sweeping landscapes.

| Season | Weather & swimming | Expert tip |
|---|---|---|
January–February | The warmest and liveliest season. Days are long, conditions favor excursions, and ports feel more vibrant. | Ideal for a first New Zealand cruise, especially if you want to maximize outdoor sightseeing. Prices and crowds may be higher. |
March–April | Quieter, still mild, and often very pleasant. The colors begin to change, vineyards are beautiful, and sightseeing feels more relaxed. | An excellent option for travelers seeking a good balance of weather, comfort, and lighter crowds. |
May–October Fewer sailings and cooler conditions. There are fewer itineraries, especially longer ocean voyages, and the weather can be more variable. Best considered for specific voyages or land extensions. For a classic cruise, the Southern Hemisphere summer is preferable. | ||
November–December | Late spring brings beautiful days. Landscapes are green, temperatures become pleasant, and crowds are often lighter than at the height of the Southern Hemisphere summer. | A very good time to combine cities, nature, and the season's first full itineraries around both islands. |
In New Zealand, the best experiences often come through contrast: a creative capital after a wild fjord, a beach within easy reach of the port, a Maori site, a wine region, or scenic cruising among the mountains.

At Milford Sound
Cliffs, waterfalls, and shifting light make the scenic passage a highlight in its own right.

In Doubtful Sound
The atmosphere is often more secluded and serene, creating a sense of vast wilderness.

In the Marlborough Sounds
Sheltered bays and green hills offer a gentler version of New Zealand's coastal scenery.

In Rotorua
Geysers, mud pools, and cultural villages reveal an essential side of the country.

In Waitangi
The site provides essential historical context on relations between Maori peoples and the British Crown.

In Tauranga
The proximity to Mount Maunganui and the Bay of Plenty connects culture, coastline, and volcanic landscapes.

In Auckland
The views from Mount Eden or the Sky Tower reveal the city amid volcanoes, harbors, and islands in the gulf.

At Mount Maunganui
The summit offers one of the most accessible panoramic views over the Bay of Plenty.

In Wellington
The Mount Victoria lookout offers a sweeping view of the city, harbor, and hills.

In Wellington
The waterfront, Te Papa, cafes, and creative neighborhoods make for a vibrant port call.

In Napier
Art Deco architecture and the vineyards of Hawke's Bay create a gentler, more refined atmosphere.

In Dunedin
The railway station, historic streets, and the Otago Peninsula create a beautiful balance between city and nature.
Cruise through Milford Sound beneath towering cliffs
Milford Sound is often the highlight of a New Zealand cruise. Travelers savor the slow passage between dark rock walls, waterfalls, mist, and shifting light, all viewed directly from the ship's deck.
Travel from Tauranga to Rotorua for geysers and Maori culture
Tauranga stands out because it opens onto a side of New Zealand that feels very different from the coast. In Rotorua, geothermal activity, steam, mud pools, and Maori cultural sites add real depth to the day.
Discover Auckland through its harbors, volcanoes, and gulf views
Auckland's constant connection to the water is part of its appeal. Travelers move easily from the waterfront to ferries and from lively neighborhoods to ancient volcanoes, quickly understanding the city through its harbors and viewpoints.
Take the ferry to Devonport to see Auckland differently
From central Auckland, the ferry to Devonport offers an easy, much-loved break. Travelers find a quieter atmosphere, historic homes, cafes, a waterfront walk, and a beautiful skyline view.
Hike to the summit of Mount Maunganui
In Tauranga, Mount Maunganui turns an easy port day into a memorable scenic experience. Travelers enjoy the climb, views over the beach, harbor, and Bay of Plenty, then the option of heading straight back down to the cafes and beaches.
Look for sea lions on the Otago Peninsula from Dunedin
From Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula brings a wilder dimension to the port day. Travelers enjoy coastal roads, hills, windswept beaches, and possible sightings of sea lions or seabirds.
A wild land, New Zealand is particularly appreciated for its nature and landscapes. In fact, it was these great national parks that attracted film director Peter Jackson to make his Lord of the Rings trilogy a few years ago. If you're an enthusiast, you can still discover Hobbiton, in Matamata, a real hobbit village that served as the setting for all three films. The same goes for Tongariro National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the world. Its three volcanoes, Ruapehu, Tongarira and Ngauruhoe, as well as its turquoise lakes, are also part of this vision of Tolkien's universe.
To immerse yourself in this wilderness, be sure to visit Rotorua. The site is known for its volcanic activity, and you can enjoy geysers and hot mud pools. Not far away, Wai-a-tapu Park is a plunge into the country's most beautiful landscapes, while Maori dance performances are also on offer to visitors. For hiking, head for Mount Wok National Park in Aoraki. A paradise for walkers and skiers alike, the area is packed with glaciers and is located in the country's highest mountain range, at 3754 meters above sea level.
New Zealand also has a number of cities to discover on a trip to the region, starting with the capital, Wellington. Located on a bay in the south of the North Island, Wellington boasts colorful roofs and a lively nightlife. For a 360° view of this atypical city, climb to the top of Mount Victoria before heading for Te papa Tengarewa. Wellington's main attraction, this museum focuses on the country's history and geography, with collections of dresses, textiles, Pacific island artefacts and fossils. The site also boasts the world's largest squid specimen ever caught, weighing in at over 495 kg. Also on the North Island, Auckland is the country's other major city. New Zealand's rugby capital, it is home to Eden Park, one of the world's most famous stadiums, where you can watch a few matches. A land rich in extinct volcanoes, Auckland is also known for its dream beaches, such as Piha, and for its main shopping avenue, Queen Street.
Divided into several islands, New Zealand has different climates, depending on where you stop over. The North Island's climate is mainly subtropical, while the South Island is divided between a very rainy climate on the west coast and in the north, and almost continuous sunshine in the south. As a southern hemisphere country, New Zealand also has inverted seasons, so you can enjoy summer between December and February, with a stable climate and temperatures between 20 and 30°, and winter between June and August. Many tourist sites close at this time of year, but ski resorts are accessible. The autumn season, from March to May, is pleasant and a little cooler, while spring, from September to November, is the wettest season.
