Germany is one of those rare destinations that lends itself equally well to a river cruise or a maritime adventure. Your ports of call will vary according to the type of cruise you have chosen and the itinerary you are pursuing. Whatever your choice, most of these journeys take in the German capital, Berlin. A city of entertainment par excellence, Berlin boasts a lively nightlife, but that's not its only asset. A city of history, Berlin is a veritable open-air museum, with its emblematic monuments bearing witness to its tumultuous past, such as the Brandenburg Gate through which sovereigns have entered Berlin over the centuries. Take advantage of your Berlin cruise to visit the Museum Island on Spreeinsel. The museums on this island trace the city's cultural history through a collection of art dating back a hundred years.

If you take a cruise on the Moselle, you'll pass through Cochem, a peaceful town where you can relax and unwind. Here, time seems to have stood still, so marked is the medieval imprint. With its maze of narrow streets, half-timbered houses and thousand-year-old castle overlooking the town from its hilltop, you'll feel as if you've stepped back into the Middle Ages.

Hamburg, in the north of the country, is another of Germany's cruising destinations. There's plenty to see and do in this city. Start your discovery of Hamburg with a visit to the Town Hall, a veritable maze of 647 rooms! Continue with a stroll through the Alstadt, Hamburg's old town, which despite a major fire in 1842 and wartime bombardments, is still home to many old monuments. These include the Chilehauss and the Sint Nikolai Tower.

Some German cruise itineraries also pass through Kiel, a fashionable city on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Many know Kiel for its bars, pubs, trendy discos and lively nightlife. In addition to its festive ambience, Kiel also appeals for its rich architectural heritage, which blends styles in a delightful hodgepodge. Among the city's must-see buildings are the Town Hall, recognizable from afar by its high tower overlooking the city, and the Warleberger House, Kiel's oldest building.

The ideal season for a cruise in Germany


Germany is one of those destinations where a cruise is possible all year round. If you're not afraid of the cold and would like to take advantage of your stopovers to practice a winter sport, then December is the ideal month to plan your cruise in Germany. If for you, cruising often means sunshine, it's best to wait until the warm weather arrives to plan your trip. To make the most of the lush landscape along the Rhine and Moselle rivers, it's best to plan your cruise as early as May. But as Germany enjoys a temperate climate, the sun is always shining right through to October.
