A cruise to the Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya or Mexican Riviera combines all the criteria for an exotic sea voyage. Fine sandy beaches lined with turquoise water, one of the world's largest coral reefs, and age-old relics of the Mayan era await you on your cruise along the Riviera Maya. The Riviera Maya is located on the Mexican coast bordering the Caribbean Sea. It stretches from the fishing village of Puerto Morelos to the Sian Ka'an reserve, classified by UNESCO as one of the world's biosphere reserves. This vast territory, created in 1998 by the State of Quintana Roo, the Circonscription de Solidaridad and the region's tourism operators, is Mexico's leading tourist destination. It owes its success to its masterful blend of ecotourism and luxury tourism. In addition to its exuberant natural beauty, this Mexican cruise destination boasts a rich historical heritage. The region is home to 5,000 archaeological sites that recall the past of the Mayan people. The Mexican Riviera also boasts Cancún, an ancient Mayan territory converted into a fashionable resort in the 1970s, to the extent that beaches such as Playa Linda and Tortugas have stolen the spotlight from archaeological museums.
A cruise to the ancient land of the Mayas
Surrounded to the north by Cancún and to the south by Punta Allen, the Riviera Maya boasts a vast expanse of beaches. But if the seaside is magnificent, especially due to the presence of the famous coral reef where sea turtles and multicolored fish abound, the main attraction of the region is the heritage left by the Mayas. Take advantage of your stopovers to discover the Mayan pyramids of Coba. Don't hesitate to climb the few hundred steps to the top of the Yucatan temple. It's well worth the effort, because at the end of your ascent, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the other surrounding ruins and the lush jungle that surrounds them. And don't miss a visit to Chichén Itzá, one of the new wonders of the world. Even though vacationers and souvenir vendors are plentiful, the place still retains its authentic charm. Its landmark monument, El Castillon, and its observatory, El Caracol, bear witness to the Mayans' advanced knowledge of mathematics, astronomy and astrology.
Amusement parks are also numerous along the Mexican Riviera, but the most exceptional is undoubtedly Xel-Ha, a natural aquarium made from a mixture of freshwater and Caribbean seawater, where various species of manatees, rays and turtles form a charming ballet. You can admire them or dive into the caves to try your hand at underwater caving among the multicolored fish. If you're a thrill-seeker, take advantage of your stopover to ride a cable bike and pedal through the trees. Playa del Carmen, the Mexican Riviera's main beach, is another stopover on a Mexican Riviera cruise.
A Mexican Riviera cruise also takes in Cabo San Lucas and its eroded cliffs. On El Medano beach, the ocean currents created by the junction of the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean create high waves that are a surfer's delight. The beaches of Cabo San Lucas are magnificent, but the town itself is not lacking in interest either, with its picturesque buildings in shimmering colors and its traditional restaurants and cafés.
When to cruise the Mexican Riviera?
Mexico enjoys a warm, humid climate all year round, but it's best to avoid the rainy season because of the risk of torrential downpours, which can sometimes spoil stopovers. Generally speaking, the ideal time to cruise the Mexican Riviera depends essentially on what you want to see during your stopovers in Mexican cities. If you want to make the most of the scenic beauty and, above all, the numerous bathing spots along the Mexican coast, plan your cruise between November and April. In this season, the heat is less intense, rainfall is lower and water temperatures are pleasant. If rain doesn't frighten you, and if you don't want to miss any of the festivals for which Mexico is famous, It's best to plan your cruise for September or October. September is Fatherland Day, and the Feast of the Dead takes place towards the end of October.
