An archipelago in the heart of Oceania
A country in Oceania, New Zealand is located in the south-western Pacific Ocean and comprises two main islands, the North Island and the South Island. They lie some 2,000 kilometers from Australia, from which they are separated by the Tasman Sea. Still a relatively unspoilt land, New Zealand is one of the last territories to have been discovered by man. Occupied by the Maoris as early as the mid-11th century, the country was invaded by Europeans in the 17th century, before becoming a fully-fledged British colony in 1840. Although the people of New Zealand declared their independence in 1907, they retained a deep attachment to the British Crown. Today, New Zealand is best known for its sport, and in particular for its rugby team, the All-Blacks. The All-Blacks have dominated the rugby world for many years now.

A wild land, New Zealand is particularly appreciated for its nature and landscapes. In fact, it was these great national parks that attracted film director Peter Jackson to make his Lord of the Rings trilogy a few years ago. If you're an enthusiast, you can still discover Hobbiton, in Matamata, a real hobbit village that served as the setting for all three films. The same goes for Tongariro National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the world. Its three volcanoes, Ruapehu, Tongarira and Ngauruhoe, as well as its turquoise lakes, are also part of this vision of Tolkien's universe.
To immerse yourself in this wilderness, be sure to visit Rotorua. The site is known for its volcanic activity, and you can enjoy geysers and hot mud pools. Not far away, Wai-a-tapu Park is a plunge into the country's most beautiful landscapes, while Maori dance performances are also on offer to visitors. For hiking, head for Mount Wok National Park in Aoraki. A paradise for walkers and skiers alike, the area is packed with glaciers and is located in the country's highest mountain range, at 3754 meters above sea level.
New Zealand also has a number of cities to discover on a trip to the region, starting with the capital, Wellington. Located on a bay in the south of the North Island, Wellington boasts colorful roofs and a lively nightlife. For a 360° view of this atypical city, climb to the top of Mount Victoria before heading for Te papa Tengarewa. Wellington's main attraction, this museum focuses on the country's history and geography, with collections of dresses, textiles, Pacific island artefacts and fossils. The site also boasts the world's largest squid specimen ever caught, weighing in at over 495 kg. Also on the North Island, Auckland is the country's other major city. New Zealand's rugby capital, it is home to Eden Park, one of the world's most famous stadiums, where you can watch a few matches. A land rich in extinct volcanoes, Auckland is also known for its dream beaches, such as Piha, and for its main shopping avenue, Queen Street.
Divided into several islands, New Zealand has different climates, depending on where you stop over. The North Island's climate is mainly subtropical, while the South Island is divided between a very rainy climate on the west coast and in the north, and almost continuous sunshine in the south. As a southern hemisphere country, New Zealand also has inverted seasons, so you can enjoy summer between December and February, with a stable climate and temperatures between 20 and 30°, and winter between June and August. Many tourist sites close at this time of year, but ski resorts are accessible. The autumn season, from March to May, is pleasant and a little cooler, while spring, from September to November, is the wettest season.
