Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, stands in the south of the country. Considered one of the southernmost capitals on the American continent, Montevideo lies on the banks of the Rio de la Plata river. Situated around a bay, the city is home to Uruguay's main port. Built to the north of the old town, the port of Montevideo is where tons of goods pass through every year. It is also where cruise ships dock, as well as vessels from neighboring Brazil and Argentina.

Still located on the plaza independencia street, the citadel gate bears witness to the city's past with the Spanish. A little further on, the Solis Theatre is a fine example of neoclassical architecture. In the plaza Matriz district, the Cabildo is one of Montevideo's most emblematic landmarks.
