Located on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, in the extreme southwest of Spain, Malaga is the departure point for a large number of cruises to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. Before you leave, take time to explore the city. Head north along the coast to come across the Pompidou Malaga center, which occupies the modern, colorful "El Cubo" building. This art and culture center features a valuable collection of works by famous artists such as Picasso, Giacometti and Francis Bacon. A trip to Malaga also includes a visit to the Picasso Museum on San Agustín Street. You can continue your stroll to the Plaça de la Merced, where Picasso's birthplace stands. At the center of the square stands an obelisk erected in memory of General Torrijos. A number of other museums and cultural sites deserve your attention in the city center, including the Wine Museum housed in the Palacio de Biedmas on the Plaza de los Viñeros. Relive the history of Andalusia with a visit to the Alcazaba, an imposing Arab fortress built in 1040. Stroll through the Arab gardens, dotted with wide avenues lined with jasmine, bougainvillea and honeysuckle. Next to the Alcazaba is the Gibralfaro, a fortified castle with ramparts and a viewpoint offering a pleasant view of the city, beaches and port. Discovering Malaga also means admiring its remarkable churches, including the Renaissance-style Cathedral de la Encarnación on Calle Molina Lari.
