Before boarding your cruise ship, explore Punic Cartagena on the outskirts of the old town. This historic core of the city is partly enclosed by Punic walls built in the 3rd century B.C. But the jewel in the crown of the Spanish city's heritage dates back to the Roman occupation: the theater. Cartagena is home to another important museum, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Also known by its acronym ARQUA, the museum houses an important underwater treasure trove left by the Punic, Hellenistic and Roman civilizations. Its collection includes over 570,000 silver and gold coins dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, glassware, ivory objects and pottery. For a panoramic view of the whole city, a trip to the Concepción hill is a must. Set in the Torres Park, this massif is crowned by another vestige of ancient Cartagena's fortifications, the 13th-century Château de la Concepción.
