San Francisco was born in the chaos of the gold rush in 1848. The bay served as a place of abandonment for the ships that arrived by the hundreds every day after rounding Cape Horn. With its complex orography, composed of marshes and island arc subject to plate tectonics, San Francisco was paradoxically easy to develop. The marshes were drained and filled and the former fishing camps were mined to build some of the most famous neighborhoods in the city today. With its location at the northern end of the eponymous peninsula, San Francisco quickly became a hub of the American West's cargo trade, especially with its huge harbor open to the Pacific Ocean that occupies a stretch of coastline from the Golden Bridge to the southeastern end of the city. San Francisco also has a Mediterranean climate among its assets. Summers are dry and hot, but winters are rainy. The thermometer reads between 15 and 24°C on sunny days and 10°C in winter.
