Papeete is said to have been founded in the 19th century on the initiative of Pastor William Cook. The city is home to French Polynesia's largest infrastructure, such as its autonomous port. The capital also boasts a rich historical heritage. Inaugurated on Christmas Eve by Monseigneur Tepano Jaussen in 1875, Notre-Dame Cathedral stands in the heart of Papeete. The building is one of the last vestiges of French Polynesian history. A few meters from the cathedral, admire the fresco depicting the story of the Bounty ship on the façade of the two-storey Norman Hall building. Opposite the Assembly building, Queen Marau's house preserves its ancient architecture. Built in 1844, this former home of Tahiti's last queen is an eye-catcher in its colonial style. Visit the gardens of Queen Aimata Pomare IV, another former queen of Tahiti. This park consists of a vast wooded area of almost 1,200 m² separated by a stream.
