Papeete is said to have been founded in the 19th century on the initiative of Pastor William Cook. The city is home to French Polynesia's largest infrastructure, such as its autonomous port. The capital also boasts a rich historical heritage. Inaugurated on Christmas Eve by Monseigneur Tepano Jaussen in 1875, Notre-Dame Cathedral stands in the heart of Papeete. The building is one of the last vestiges of French Polynesian history.
