Seward is one of the most important ports on the northwest coast of the North American continent. Located in a glacier-free area, the port's main activity is fishing and tourism. In the past, a Russian merchant named Alexander Baranov established a shipyard and a fur trading post in Resurrection Bay in the city's present location. Today, the city of Seward is home to several shipyards and has become a major stop for cruise ships sailing the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its location, the port of Seward was chosen as the starting point for the traditional Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which passes through the city of Anchorage and Nome. The city is also located near Kenai Fjords National Park, an ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts.
