A destination for a wide audience
India is one of the world's largest and most colorful countries, covering an area of 3,287,590 km². It's a country in northern Asia, a large part of the former British East India Empire. It's also one of the world's most populous territories, with over a billion inhabitants. Thanks to its two main coastlines, the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east, India boasts numerous tropical beaches to suit all budgets. But tourists and holidaymakers don't come to India just for the beaches. Above all, they want to immerse themselves in a country of contrasts on every level: grand palaces in the north and modest towns in the south, as well as remarkable shades of color within the various cities and regions. What's more, India is also renowned for appealing to a broad spectrum of visitors, thanks in particular to the wide range of tourist activities on offer: the more sporty can enjoy trekking and hiking, while others can enjoy a stroll on safari or a swim on the beach, as well as cultural visits to sumptuous historical monuments.

If you're passionate about Indian culture and traditions, you'll certainly want to sample the traditional Himalayan way of life, with its Buddhist monasteries in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. It's also a great opportunity for mountain trekking and skiing, as the main ski resort is located in Gulmarg, Kashmir. The more adventurous can venture into Madhya Pradesh, particularly the Kahna Park, with its thick jungles where tigers are king. And don't forget to visit Agra in the Uttar Pradesh region, home of the famous Taj Mahal, a white mausoleum adorned with diamonds in honor of a "precious" princess.
If you'd like to learn more about the rituals of Hindu pilgrims, we suggest the city of Benares, which is linked to that of the sacred river Ganges, drawn from the hair of the deity Shiva. A romantic stroll through the mythical sites of Rajasthan, including Udaipur, the White City, or Jaipur, the Pink City, will delight young couples. Otherwise, South India is not only the hub of the film industry, like Mumbaï, but also a region of opportunities for elephant or dromedary rides, boat trips, meditation sessions, horseback riding and mountaineering, depending on the season. The Andaman Islands are the number-one destination for scuba diving, thanks to the clarity of their waters. You'll also be amazed by the richness of India's artistic heritage: body designs with henna, Carnatic and Hindustani music, the art of cooking seasoned with all kinds of spices - these are the hallmarks of India as a whole. Who hasn't tried the succulent chicken curry? You can also try dhal, a kind of lentil stew that generally serves as a side dish, or thali, a very complete meal in the country, served on a platter covered with fresh banana leaves.
The vast territory that is India is not only diverse in terms of cultures, but also in terms of climates, given that climatic conditions in the far north are very different from those in the far south. The country is characterized by three seasons: hot, humid and cool. For example, in the northern plains, it starts to get unbelievably hot around April, to match the dry, dusty air of central France. Towards the end of June, however, the monsoon season kicks in, so the ideal time to set foot in India is between mid-November and mid-March. But this generally depends on your exact destination: if you're planning to explore Sikkim and the north-eastern Himalayan regions, we suggest you go there between April and September, for a nice cool day; but if you're planning to travel through the deserts of Rajasthan and the north-western Himalayas, opt for the monsoon period instead.
